Description
Sjaak Kooij’s ceramic sculptures bring to life masks, monsters, and fantasy figures inspired by mythology, folklore, and historical mask cultures. Themes such as duality, multiple identities, humor, and alienation are central to this work. By combining ceramics with textiles and painting, he creates a contemporary, theatrical visual language in which the boundary between reality and fantasy blurs. Sjaak Kooij (1982) is a visual artist and educator who graduated from the Amsterdam University of the Arts (AHK) in 2005. His multidisciplinary work—comprising murals, oil paintings, sculptures, and ceramics—combines everyday street life with theater, absurdity, folklore, and mythology. In addition to his independent practice and international residencies, he is active as a curator and runs Studio 1931 together with his partner.
